My Teaching Experiences

Teaching Practice

1. Procedures of Teaching
Each teacher runs his or her classroom differently, so it is important to set rules and regulations to run the classroom smoothly and then tell the pupils about the rules and regulations. Regardless of the age of the pupils, simply posting the expectations or rules on the wall is not enough. For me, rules and regulations must be taught, practiced, and reinforced throughout the teaching activities.

- Write out the expectations
For my teaching, students must know what to do and how to do it correctly. I must explicitly describe each step of the procedure. In my teaching activities, I allow pupils to move from their seats because in PE subjects, pupils cannot just imagine movement but they must do the movements. Besides that, I also allow the pupils to ask the teacher's help. And finally I always allow pupils to communicate in the form of discussions that I always do while I teach. I call this procedure with MAC (Movement, Assistance, Conversation)
- Prepare Visuals
It is very helpful to create a visual aid in the explanation of the lesson. One example of a visual is a “Looks Like, Sounds Like” chart, pictures, and videos. We must remember that pupils like visual aids or pupils wants to see something for them to be able to learn
- Teaching Procedures
Using the prepared visual aids, take time to specifically teach each procedure or activity. Explain what the pupils should do, how they should move, who they should be talking to, and any other details they are expected to know.
- Practice Procedures
In addition to the teacher’s explanation, pupils need a chance to actually practice the procedure. For example, after teaching pupils how to do the Wall-sit, Backbend, Split for physical fitness test. Students should be able to demonstrate the correct procedure. They also enjoy having fun with this process by showing the “example” and, once mastered, being able to perform the “non-example."
- Monitoring and Assessing
I always  monitor the pupils and assess how well they are meeting the procedural expectations. Usually I always Implement a class-wide motivation system like Fill-in-the-Blank, 100 Squares, or Marble Jar to reinforce my teaching procedure. I also use Lesson Plan to teach them, you can download my lesson plan and my subject matter for Elementary School Grade 5 and Elementary School Grade 6

2. Time management and organizing activities
Teaching at the Elementary Laboratory School of BSU Philippines is different from teaching Elementary School in Indonesia. Every day starting from Monday to Friday all subjects are at the same time. There, we were only given 45 minutes to teach one subject. Working as a teacher requires excellent time management skills. I need to balance the long-term goals of the classroom, the immediate educational needs of the students and the large volume of paperwork that comes with every assignment.

3. Problem-Solving
When practice teaching I was faced with time problem. 45 minutes is not enough time to do physical activity in the physical education subject. In PE I need time to review, explain topics, practice with pupils, conduct assessments, and provide assignments. In the first few days when I did practice teaching, I always ran out of time when I reached the assessment section. In various ways I did a lot of strategies in regulating the teaching time, among others, compacting the subject matter, dividing the allocation of time from the lesson plan. Finally I got a gap to manage my teaching time and no longer ran out of time in teaching activities.
Besides that, I was faced with the problem of sports equipment at ELS-BSU. I didn’t find enough sports equipment. The way out is to be creative by modifying sports equipment at ELS-BSU with the materials needed that are around. In this way there is no reason not to teach the subject because of incomplete sports support facilities. The teacher is a person who is more creative and flexible.

4. Classroom management
In the classroom management I always use my teaching style when I teach in Indonesia. I always use polite language, maintain eye contact, keep my phone in my pocket, give pupils time to submit opinions, provide learning material that can be modified with the needs and conditions in the field. Besides that I also use the teaching method "learning by doing" which is very suitable for the characteristics of PE subject matter and for the pupils. Besides, to organize and instill discipline in the pupils, I enforce clear and consistent rules. An example, before the lesson begins all students must be in the class on time, before the pupils pray together, and I don't allow students to move or speak when I explain the subject matter in front of the class.
